Invisalign® is a great option for adults who decide it is finally time to straighten their teeth but are concerned with the aesthetic look and physical feel of traditional metal braces.
While metal braces have been used to straighten teeth successfully for decades, they are not without their downsides. Namely, they can be uncomfortable — leading to cut gums and lips — they can be a hassle to floss between, and they are unsightly (which can present a problem for some adults in competitive job markets).
But is Invisalign® just as effective as braces? Well, the answer is yes and no. Simply, it depends on the specifics of your mouth.
In many situations, Invisalign® can straighten gapped or misaligned teeth quickly and discreetly.
However, Invisalign® may not be recommended for those with more complex dental problems. The only way to restore that smile and full confidence may be to go with traditional braces.
We suggest that you consult with an orthodontist to help you make an informed decision on whether or not Invisalign® is right for you.
What Does Invisalign® Treat?
Gapped teeth contribute to poor dental health, while an overbite can cause chronic pain and even gum damage. With Invisalign® and the help of an experienced orthodontist, the treatment can correct these problems and other dental issues.
Open bite, overcrowding, crossbite, and underbite are just some of the problems that Invisalign® can correct. However, each patient is different, and it’s always best to consult with a professional to know what treatment is right for you.
How Does Invisalign® Work?
You can achieve an attractive smile and straight teeth without wearing traditional metal braces through Invisalign®. Also called “invisible aligners,” this modern treatment uses specifically molded clear trays to help patients improve their smiles and straighten their teeth.
However, they do more than just help you achieve a perfect smile; Invisalign® can also correct bite issues.
These custom-made trays must be worn for 22 hours a day. They should be removed when you eat and brush/floss your teeth. This also gives you a chance to clean your aligners.
Because Invisalign® is not physically attached to your teeth, the treatment does rely on the “honor system.” You must remember to wear your aligners for the appropriate time, or you will not see the desired results.
How Does Invisalign® Differ From Traditional Braces?
Unlike braces, the trays are invisible, which won’t make them unattractive. It can still correct bite issues without worrying about anyone seeing those unattractive wires or rubber bands.
While Invisalign® may not be able to correct complex dental problems treatable only through traditional braces, the treatment takes only a couple of years to straighten the teeth.
With traditional braces, it takes longer, usually about five years or more. Invisalign® is also a lot more comfortable to wear, and it’s easier to brush and floss with clear aligners.
