Many individuals think that dental and oral hygiene is only important in childhood; however, it is extremely important to maintain a healthy routine into adulthood in order to prevent infection and disease. When visiting my Los Angeles dentistry practice, I remind individuals to brush, floss, and rinse regularly. Brushing the teeth and rinsing at least twice a day can help remove plaque build-up and strengthen teeth.
Toothpastes and rinses containing fluoride can help the teeth keep their enamel intact and prevent them from deteriorating later in life. In addition, rinses can help kill bacteria that can cause infections. It is also important to thoroughly clean the tongue, which can house bacteria as well. Also, flossing once a day removes debris that gets stuck in between teeth and near the gum line. Furthermore, chewing sugar free gum containing xylitol can help generate saliva in the mouth, which helps to rinse away sugar and other damaging culprits in the mouth. Following these simple rules can lead to healthy teeth and gums that do not require extensive treatments. However, as you age and may be required to take certain medications, there may be some side effects that cause changes to the teeth and/or gums. Proper oral hygiene will reduce the risk of complications should they occur.
