Patients who receive dental implants – titanium rods that replace the natural tooth root – must be sure to follow their dental provider’s instructions in order to ensure proper healing. An educated and well-informed patient may achieve optimal results when doing so.
Some tips to follow during the recovery period include:
- Biting down on gauze pads for approximately one hour at a time within the first 12 to 24 hours of your procedure
- To help control bleeding, place a moistened black tea bag on the treated area and bite down
- Place an ice pack on the outside of the cheek on the side of the dental implants to help pain and swelling
- Smoking should be ceased for at least five days in order to prevent complications during the healing process
- Keep clear of hot foods and liquids during the first week after the treatment; the warm can cause the blood clots to dissolve and may cause infections
- Straws should not be used when drinking beverages, the pressure may cause blood clots to dislodge from the treated area
